A Midsummer Night’s Dream

June 14–30, 2019

Valley Center Stage

A Midsummer Night’s Dream is a raucous tale of midsummer madness set in Athens. Shakespeare’s charming and most popular comedy is replete with plot twists of mistaken identity, mismatched lovers and mischief-making fairies, who meddle with magical love potions causing two couples to become ensnared in a chaotic swirl of love lost and found, transformed and restored. A lively band of characters including a rustic troupe of would-be actors also help hinder the couples on their way to a happily ever after. It is a hilarious story that has withstood the test of time entertaining audiences throughout the ages!

Directed by Wynter and Brenden Elwood. With Wynter’s exquisite eye for creating beautiful sets and Brenden’s experience as a Shakespearian actor, this production will surely delight! Previous directing credits for the Elwood’s include A Christmas Carol (2017, 2018), Night Must Fall, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland/Who Stole the Queen of Hearts’ Tarts?, and Becky’s New Car.

Born in England, Shakespeare was an important member of the Lord Chamberlain’s Men company of theatrical players from roughly 1594 onward. In his 20 years as a playwright, Shakespeare wrote plays that capture the complete range of human emotion and conflict, and have been performed in countless hamlets, villages, cities and metropolises for more than 400 years.

"Love looks not with the eyes, but with the mind,
And therefore is winged Cupid painted blind.”
William Shakespeare, "A Midsummer Night's Dream"

“The course of true love never did run smooth.”
William Shakespeare, "A Midsummer Night's Dream"

“Lovers and madmen have such seething brains
Such shaping fantasies, that apprehend
More than cool reason ever comprehends.”
William Shakespeare, "A Midsummer Night's Dream"
